inside of airportIf you suffer from sleep apnea in State College, you must make a few changes to your nightly routine to sleep soundly. While you are at home, this is pretty easy; however, you are about to travel. Even when you are away from home, you must remain compliant with your treatment to protect your health and your quality of sleep. While you are gone, there are a few simple tips to follow to make the trip a bit easier and less stressful.

1. Check Airline Guidelines

If you will be traveling by plane, you will need to pass through airport security and check your luggage. Now, there are some fairly strict rules and regulations regarding what can be taken through security and onto an airplane. To ensure that you do not run into any unexpected complications, check your carrier’s specific guidelines at least two weeks prior to your departure.

2. Carry Your Prescription

Although no one expects it to happen, your luggage can get lost. If you find yourself in this unfortunate situation, you need to have a Plan B in place. In case your CPAP or oral appliance should get lost, carry your prescription with you. Do not keep it in your luggage. Instead, carry it in your purse or wallet.

3. Check the Power Supply

If you use a CPAP machine, you will need to plug it in. Some countries do not use the same voltage or adapters as the U.S. If you will be traveling out of the country, it is best to bring a universal power adapter with you. In addition, pack an extension cord as well in case your hotel does not have an outlet near your bed.

4. Take Cleaning Products with You

While you are away from home, your oral appliance or CPAP equipment will still need to be cleaned. Take all necessary cleaning products with you; however, be sure to check the airline’s requirements for sizes and quantities that can be brought onto the plane.

5. Pack Carefully

You do not want to arrive at your destination to find that your oral appliance or CPAP was damaged while you were traveling. To protect it, take the time to pack it carefully and use protective cases.

Sleep Soundly While Traveling

Sleep apnea does not have to put a damper on your travel plans. Make the most of your vacation by taking the time to prepare before you leave. You will sleep soundly to get a restful night’s sleep to enjoy your time away from home.
